Season 1 of Riverdale
left us in a whirlwind of emotions, so when The CW announced that June 8 is the official premiere date of the second season
(October 11 at 8 pm), we were excitedly left with a number of speculations. Here’s what has been discussed so far about the upcoming episodes:
1. Archie’s character is going to get dark
Things are going to be very different for the boy-next-door Archie in season 2. According to showrunner Roberto Aguirre Sacasa (RAS), he will be going on a “hero’s journey,” similar to Bruce Wayne and Peter Parker. But before that, he will be dealing with a lot of revenge, darkness, and violence. This alone is something exciting to look forward to, as many of us thought Archie initially had it easy in season 1.
2. A “civil war” is coming to town
In the season finale, Betty provided a forecast, telling her beloved Jughead that she didn’t want to “let a civil war rip us apart”. True enough, RAS confirms to TV Line
and Entertainment Tonight
that the war will happen between the north side and the south side of Riverdale.
3. Jughead might take a dark turn as well, jeopardizing his relationship with Betty
Having confirmed that a civil war will occur, does this mean that Jughead
will have some tough decisions to make when it comes to joining the Serpents? In an interview with TV Line
, Cole Sprouse shares that the whole show will be “getting darker and stranger” again. “This heavy cinematography, this overbearing coloration, this really dark content that’s kind of over-the-top and campy” is how he describes the tone of the show’s second season will be.
4. The plot will pick up exactly where season one left off
Archie’s journey to darkness will be the “spine” of the second season, and the focus of the beginning will be finding out who shot Fred. On May 23, it was stated that the official episode title is “A Kiss Before Dying,” and that Archie and the gang will find out what will happen with Fred by the end of the first season.
5. New characters are coming to town
According to the show’s executive producer Sarah Schechter, a new character in the name of Nick St. Clair is coming to town. Nick’s character, who is Veronica’s ex-boyfriend from New York, is said to give way to a dark side of Veronica, who Schechter says is “much darker than Dark Betty”. It is important to note that Betty’s sister Polly is also due to give birth to twins in season two!
