5 Things to Know Before Applying for College

Transitioning to college can lead you to experiencing a whirlwind of emotions—there is the dread of taking entrance exams and the excitement college experiences will bring. So before you get too overwhelmed, it is a good idea to start preparing early.

Here are 5 things you should know before taking the next step:

1. Ask yourself the important questions

College will allow you to make more independent decisions, so it’s better to start early and to ask yourself certain questions: What course do I want to take up? What do I see myself doing in the future? Does the location of the campus matter? You might not know the answers right away, but thinking about it would benefit you in the near future.

2. Apply to your dream school

Certain factors can get in the way such as money, parents, school, etc. However, it is always worth a shot, as you might regret not going for it later on.

3. Have back-up choices

Remember this: not everything goes according to plan, but in the end, you will realize why things worked out as such. You may already have a dream school in mind, but having a few other options is realistic as well.

4. Don’t forget about your recommendation letter

If you have a teacher in mind, it is better to ask them for a recommendation letter with enough time, so they can really think about what to write.

5. Be yourself

When writing an essay for the school that you’re applying for, remember that they want to know about you–who you are, what you have to offer, and what you want to do in the future. The admissions employees already receive a number of applications, so rather than talking about how good the school is, find what makes you stand out.
