I was at the Otso Diretso event at my Alma Mater UP last night. I first went to my college the BA building with a lot of memories tucked in my mind … & as I walked into the driveway with my umbrella, I bumped into Mar Roxas who was running into the rain without an umbrella. I willingly offered him mine & he was refusing it, eager to run to the crowd. As I witnessed his humility once again, his people looked at me with grateful eyes as I bade my nice, big umbrella goodbye. I quietly watched educated & amazing volunteers humbly working backstage. I heard some of the speeches. And I wanted to cry. The Otso Diretso candidates are not politicians. They are professionals who want to serve our people. Our country needs to have a balance. I believe that the current government has done a lot of good for the Philippines but there are many areas that need brakes & greater accountability. I grieve with those who lost their children & families because of the misguided drug war, one of who is Wilma, of my accounting staff, whose brother-in-law was mercilessly murdered while his wife was recovering from brain surgery. While I understand that our president needs to have trusted people by his side, his office is that of the Executive department & in my opinion, it would be best to keep his loyal team by him there. The legislative body must be run by committed legislators, seasoned &educated lawyers &leaders who have the Constitution to protect &study in the light of changing environments &major advancements in technology. Chel Diokno,Romy Macalintal & bar topnotcher Pilo Hilbay are amazing lawyers. Mar Roxas, Erin Tañada,Chel & Bam Aquino are their fathers’ sons. Brilliant leaders who work quietly despite being bashed &insulted. Samira Gutoc went to me to give me a hug& I was blown away. The feisty lady is all marshmallow inside. Gary Alejano, the Magdalo soldier, is a Christian& willingly but shyly posed with me &my brother Kiko Pangilinan. I watched people under the rain listening to& supporting their candidates with passion &perseverance. And I realized that the rain had to pour. God was showing us that the rain will come. But He will see us through. His way. #otsodiretso
