Who Do We Want As The Next Darna?

After Liza Soberano’s withdrawal from Darna last Thursday, Star Cinema announced that they’re on the search for a new lead star for the film project.

But even before Liza’s announcement, netizens have already joined forces to create their own version of Darna. With the hashtag #SigawDarna, creatives shared their artworks of Darna as a morena superheroine.

Mars Ravelo’s original creation of this superheroine represents Filipino women. And from the very start, the casting of Liza has been heavily criticized because, though she is undoubtedly beautiful and Pinoy, she still has conventional Eurocentric features.

But Darna should represent every Filipino woman; not just the ones whom we glorified for years because of their pretty faces. For decades, we’ve seen lead roles go to actresses who fit the Westernized standards of beauty. It’s something we’ve grown accustomed to and admittedly still glorify, but we can’t really see ourselves in them because we don’t look like them.

If there’s anything to realize after seeing the netizens’ love for Darna, it’s that representation is important. Filipinos are diverse and beautiful if we just give each other a chance to be represented properly.

Here’s our dream casting for the Filipina superheroine (from the classic actresses to the rising stars!):

With everything that still needed to be done for our editorial shoot, she was practically Super Woman—multi-tasking things by getting her hair and makeup done, while taking calls from her wedding coordinator. . . . In this exciting cover, we focus on the details of her wedding planning—from the moment she got engaged, to what she looks forward to the most about married life, to tips she can give brides-to-be.
