The MET Gala is the prime event of the fashion industry in which everyone aspires to be invited to. With its star-studded guest list of fashion, film, music, and art icons, who wouldn’t want to be in the so-called “party of the year”?
The event also includes performances and an exhibit of the works of top fashion designers. Each year, the theme of the MET has always been highly anticipated. This year’s theme is “Camp: Notes on Fashion,” based on the essay by culture critique Susan Sontag.
This theme was chosen due to its relevance to the current state of the world culturally and politically. As “camp”, defined by Sontag, is a certain kind of theatricality or exaggerated emphasis with roots coming from the queer culture. It is a seriousness that fails, and it is the love for something that is unnatural and over time “camp” that has become something that cannot be defined.
The public has always been outspoken on who followed the theme of MET. This year was no exception. On this list are the celebrities who were applauded for following the theme:
Wearing a see-through blouse with ruffles, trousers, and heeled boots along with matching painted nails, and a pearl earring, Harry Styles combined both feminine and masculine elements through his outfit.
Lady Gaga was a showstopper on the pink carpet. She had four outfit changes, starting off with a massive pink gown and stripping it all by the end into a crystal bra, sparkly fishnet stockings and platform boots that gave us flashbacks with how Lady Gaga was when she was first discovered — truly a queen of “camp.”
Serena was a stunner on and off the tennis court with her Atelier Versace neon yellow floral gown, partnered with comfy Nike Air Force 1 trainers. No one ever dared to do this at the MET before, which made her outfit “camp.”
A crowd favorite was Zendaya. Praised for her red carpet looks every MET Gala, this year was no different. She truly showed off theatricality by embodying a modern MET version of Cinderella through her “fairy god-brother” who literally lit up her dress. And committed that she was to the role, Zendaya “accidentally” left her glass slipper on the pink carpet.
Met Gala 2019 was one that lived up to its expectations and continues to celebrate the arts and creativity that is fashion. It continues to strive better and more outrageous each year and as early as now, people are already highly excited, waiting for next year’s MET.
