Parkland Introduces a Stylish Bag Made from Plastic Bottles and Apple Waste

Try to imagine a world without plastic. Impossible, right? We’ve been so dependent on this material, it’s now suffocating our planet. Private and public institutions have been solving this plastic problem just like what Parkland is doing. They’re setting a new standard by introducing a unique manufacturing process that would make Mother Nature really proud. The Vancouver-based brand steps up its game by simply applying the 3R: reduce, reuse, and recycle.

Not a lot of people know that the lifespan of a plastic water bottle is 450 years. You read that right. It would take centuries before they deteriorate. Parkland wants to lessen this waste by using plastic on their bags. The exterior fabric is now made from 100% recycled plastic water bottles. It uses 12 clear PET (polyethylene terephthalate) bottles to make one bag. This makes it more durable and lightweight.

Parkland’s iconic diamond detail also had a makeover. It is now made from apples. Yes, we’re talking about the fruit. Don’t worry because it’s not the whole apple, but only its by-product called “pellemela.” Combined with solvent and polyurethane, Parkland created an animal-friendly material with properties similar to genuine leather. A 100% vegan apple leather? Why not?

Since 2018, Parkland committed to use plastic bottles to create the exterior fabric of their bags. This Spring of 2019, their sustainable bag is close to be purely recycled when they added the apple leather to the equation. The great news is it won’t cost consumers more because they will shoulder the additional manufacturing costs.

For environmental-conscious consumers, these bags made from plastic bottles are now in the Philippines. Parkland unveiled their newest collection last June 7, 2019 at Bonifacio Global City, Taguig. Included in the collection is the new Parkland Bobbi, a hip pack with adjustable strap that can be worn around the waist or across the body.
