Pia Wurtzbach and Gerald Anderson for Inside Showbiz Weekly

The Perfect Project Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach is dressed down, garbed in a light cotton dress or clothed in a top and shorts. She is barefaced with her long locks either unfixed or hurriedly styled. Awarded hunk actor Gerald Anderson, meanwhile, has rowdy hair and an unshaved countenance. His tanned body dons a simple top paired with shorts. At times, he does not wear a shirt at all. Everything about them is made plain, laid bare on the Zambales countryside. Yet with the way they speak, one can easily feel their sentiments. With their piercing eyes, one can sense their heightened struggles and passions. They let out emotions naturally and show expressions effortlessly.

Most challenging role

The 29-year-old Gerald, who started out in showbiz in 2006, has a long list of soap operas and movies. Among his notable characters on television are JR in Tayong Dalawa, the title character in Budoy, and Gabriel in Ikaw Lang ang Iibigin. In movies, he is known for Paano Na Kaya, Always Be My Maybe, and the critically-acclaimed On the Job (OTJ). Despite having taken on risky roles, Gerald admits that the role of Burn is something else. “This is the hardest I’ve ever done. ‘Yung character ko has so many layers and so many levels of different emotions and different problems sa buhay niya, love life, trabaho, sa pamilya and may isa pa pero malalaman nila ‘yun ‘pag napanood nila. So, to express that in a very small way but dapat maramdaman mo is really hard. This is the most complicated role I’ve ever portrayed.” His statement comes as a surprise because people would think that his gritty character in OTJ is more difficult to do. “Para akong nasa Disneyland sa On the Job eh. Ine-enjoy ko ‘yung shooting experience. It’s not really about the genre kasi ‘pag napanood mo ‘yung trailer ng My Perfect You, it’s a very cute and energetic movie. But there’s something behind it pa. Kahit medyo light ‘yung ibang mga eksena, mahirap pa rin siyang gawin because of the location and because of the characters we’re doing.”

Driven to Succeed

The My Perfect You lead actors say that their struggles have helped them strive for better things. They did not allow their low points to dishearten them. They marched on, armed with the encouragement of their loved ones, with a stronger dedication to their passions. Gerald points out something he has noticed about his leading lady. “Siyempre wala pa akong masyadong napapanood sa kaniya. So I had no background. ‘Yung first day palang nakita ko na she wants this, gusto niya ‘yung ginagawa niya.” He adds, “And to work with someone like that makes everything so much easier and you look forward to going to work because ‘yung katambal mo is also passionate.” Pia also saw the same dedication in Gerald, whom she has nothing but praises for. She also shares her high hopes for their first project. “I don’t think he remembers this. But it was the first time that I was getting nervous. Tapos ‘di ko na napigil kasi wala akong nakakausap eh. Sabi ko sa kaniya, ‘I really want this movie to work.’” And work it did as their film had an opening day gross of P10 million.
